Sea, Shore & Season — The Nature That Inspires Every Breakell Design

Walk the waterfront in Newport, Rhode Island, and you'll see it everywhere: the shape of an anchor on a dock post, the curve of a wave breaking on the rocks, a lobster boat heading out at dawn. At J.H. Breakell & Co., these aren't just scenes — they're design inspiration.

Rooted in Place

From the beginning, the natural world surrounding Newport has been the primary source of inspiration for Breakell jewelry. Founders Jim and Joan Breakell — both deeply connected to the rhythms of coastal New England — built their entire design language around what they saw, felt, and loved about living by the sea.

That instinct has never changed. Every new collection still begins with nature: the textures, the shapes, the symbolism of the environment around us.

The Sea

Our sea life collection is perhaps the most direct expression of Newport's maritime identity. Whales and whale tails, anchors, lobsters, crabs, seahorses, oysters, sailboats, lighthouses, sandals left by the water's edge — each piece captures something specific and true about life on the coast. A sterling silver Conanicut Island pendant. A perfect wave. A sand dollar worn close to the heart.

These aren't generic nautical motifs. They're designs made by people who live here, for people who love this place.

The Seasons

New England's seasons are dramatic and beautiful — and they've always found their way into our work. The most beloved expression of this is our Annual Snowflake Collection, released every year since 1994. Each design captures a different facet of winter: its geometry, its quiet, its themes of peace, hope, and renewal.

Beyond snowflakes, you'll find nature and garden-inspired pendants throughout our collection — flora, fauna, leaves, trees — that reflect the lush growth of a New England spring and summer.

Why It Matters

Jewelry inspired by real places and real nature carries something that generic design can't replicate: a sense of belonging. When someone wears a Breakell piece, they're wearing a piece of Newport, of the Atlantic coast, of the seasons they love. It connects them to something beyond the object itself.

That connection — between craft, place, and the person wearing it — is what we've been working toward since 1972. It's what we'll keep working toward.
